The answer's easy: our automaker's latest full-size, light-duty pickup took home high marks from both the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration -- the auto industry's premier authorities on driving security. However, plenty went into earning them.

Indeed, 2019 Ford F-150 was the only truck to earn the highest and much-coveted "Good" rating in every IIHS crash-test category. It came out ahead among 11 other crew cab models in passenger-side small overlap front crash testing. Moreover, the NHTSA gave the new Ford F-150 crew cab a five-star overall vehicle score for crash resistance.

Numerous factors influenced the pickup's resilience. First off, a frame made of high-strength steel. Secondly, a body comprised of high-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloy. Third, some seriously smart engineering, the results of which were a whopping 31 safety innovations. They included a roof crossmember composed of extruded aluminum, the addition of a frame crossmember, weight-reducing nylon hinge pillar reinforcements, and specially and expertly designed wheel blockers.

Of course, these advancements weren't all -- aren't all -- that make the new Ford F-150 a model of comprehensive safety and ultimate peace of mind. The pickup's also loaded with intelligent driver aids, both standard and available depending on trim. They include:

  • A blind-spot info system with trailer coverage
  • A cross-traffic alert system
  • Adaptive cruise control with a stop-and-go feature
  • Pre-collision assistance
  • Pedestrian detection
  • A lane-keeping system
  • A reverse sensor system
  • A 360-degree camera
  • Active park assistance
