The city of Valdosta, and surrounding Lowndes County, has always been a site of rich cultural exchange, starting with the blending of the Seminole and Creek peoples with the Spanish missionaries and American pioneers as far back as the 1800s. A humorous story surrounds the beginning of building towns in the area, when the county seat, Troupville, marched four miles to the south where the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad companies were building railways-and moved the railway up closer to their town.

Now, Valdosta has gotten its modern name from Governor George Troup's plantation, called "Val d'Osta." It became the new county seat in 1860. The city boomed in economic prosperity, as its fertile soil was ripe for cotton crops; however, after the boll weevils devastated the cotton plants in the early 1900s, other crops, such as pecans, peanuts, and tobacco saved the town.

Valdosta's rich history has followed it into the modern era. The city features six different historical districts committed to preserving the architecture and character of days gone by. It even has two places on the National Register of Historic Places, the Carnegie Library and the Crescent.

Agriculture still contributes to the thriving economy in Valdosta, but the city's location and quality of life continues to attract new residents and new businesses, steadily growing it into a larger and more prosperous place to live. There's a reason it's called "South Georgia's Regional City." With a diverse community of people and plenty to do and see, Valdosta offers a community that visitors and residents alike adore.
